Dear Editor:
I recently had the opportunity to visit your region to meet the fine people of the Eastern Panhandle. As part of my exploratory campaign for the Office of Secretary of State, I am listening to West Virginians to hear the views and concerns they have. This is the only way I know how to campaign having run successfully for two terms this way in the 14th Senatorial District of north-central West Virginia.
I learned a great deal during my visit to your area, most notably some of the problems your citizens have with regards to the rapid growth, increase in traffic, the lack of attention you feel Charleston gives to the Panhandle, crime concerns, high taxation and more. Fortunately, some of these problems are being addressed, but clearly more attention needs to be given to this important area of West Virginia.
I read an article recently which noted that your area is the fastest growing region of our state. This is especially important since other areas of West Virginia have seen population loss and the new influx of residents into the Eastern Panhandle balances things out. But, this means key state resources, such as highway, education, State Police, job development and more must be increased to meet these rising demands.
Valencia hotels During my visits to Morgan, Jefferson and Berkeley Counties, I couldn't help but take in the beauty and grandeur of your area. There is a tremendous amount of history in the Eastern Panhandle and it is a place I intend to boast of during other travels I will take around the state in the coming months. The nice thing about running for a statewide office is you get to meet new people and see new places. That is exciting for me.
I want to thank all of those who helped make my trip to the Eastern Panhandle an enjoyable one, especially Denise Thomas, webmaster of this site.
I would like to extend an invitation to those I have had the privilege to meet, and those I didn't, to keep in touch regarding questions or concerns they have. My mailing address is HC 64, Box 83, Parsons, WV 26287, or you may e-mail me at smminear@aol.com.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Senator Sarah Minear
